Another year of Halloween...this marks the 3-year anniversary of Uncle Benny, the best pumpkin we've ever carved. Kasin, if you ever read my blog anymore, the picture of John, Uncle Benny, and me is framed and sitting on top of John's toolbox at work.
Anyway, I carved one pumpkin for my students on Thursday, and toasted the seeds for them. Being old Chinese people, the biggest hit was of course the pumpkin seeds.
On Monday, I carved another pumpkin at my other school, and opted for a panda bear instead of just a face that I made up. We were told that we HAD to dress up for school or else we'd be forcibly dressed, and we wouldn't get lunch. So I bought a grass skirt from Dollarama, and I had a couple of lei's lying around. I spent the day as a hula girl. It was a little embarrassing on the bus... I went to South Keys for a while to shop after school, then John picked me up and we went to his sister's house. There were about 10 adults for 2 kids trick-or-treating! Quite the chaperone party! John and I held down the fort and gave out candy and chips while everyone else went door-to-door.
The best kid of the night was this little guy who'd just turned 3. He was dressed in a bright red fireman's suit and helmet. His mom told me that he'd just kissed both the jack-o-lanterns outside. "Well, pumpkins need love too," I figured. Sabs had told me that Juliette wanted a scary face, while Nicolas wanted a sad face, so that's how the pumpkins were carved. The kid pointed to Juliette's and said "that one's scary!" So I pointed to the other one and told him that this one was sad. So the little guy goes and hugs the pumpkin because he wanted to make it feel better. He couldn't even reach his arms fully around the pumpkin, but that's ok, I didn't want him to get too close anyway - I would've hated to see the fireman catch on fire. :( In any case, that was the best moment of the evening!
