I was meaning to blog for the longest time, but the internet was down all last week (it's a stupid story - I won't get into it). First of all, it made me realize how dependent I am on the the big I... I can't teach without internet access!! :( I'm completely uncreative on my own and I need to steal ideas. It's so sad.
Anyway, the *BIG* news, for those blog readers who didn't get my mass email... is that I've been accepted into the JET Program. I will be leaving Ottawa on July 29 for about one year, unless I'm making oodles of money and decide to recontract. I don't know yet where I will be going in Japan; I'll find out sometime in May.
The most common question people ask me (other than "when do you leave?") is "What about John?" The answer is YES, we're staying together, NO he isn't coming with me (1 he has his career here, 2 he has no interest in living abroad nor can he speak Japanese, and 3 what the heck would he DO there with no work visa?!). This seems to strike people as "oh, but how can you leave him?!" It's easy - I'm going to get on a plane and fly away.
What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that I've been wanting to do this for YEARS. This has been my goal, my dream, and everything I have been aiming my life towards for the past few years. Heck, I've been mulling this since high school. I told John prolly in our first month that I wanted to go away. I want to leave the nest and see some of what the world has to offer. He was fine with it. It's my dream. Why should he stand in my way? He'd regret it and I'd regret it (and possibly resent him). It's what I need to do.
But how do you explain this to people? Especially Chinese people? I've gotten various threats from some of his family members like "don't you dare leave my nephew for some Japanese guy" (gee, thanks a lot.) In fact, I've gotten quite a few of these insinuations. I realize perhaps it's all in jest, but REALLY. THANKS a LOT.
In other news that doesn't get me riled up, I've cut off most of my hair. I whacked off 10" of it and donated it to Locks of Love. I now have short hair. My hair hasn't been this short since grade 12! It feels nice, actually, to only have to use a dab of shampoo and it taking 2minutes to blow dry. The only downside is that John now likes to pet my hair - backwards.
Yeah, I'm really gonna miss THAT for a year!
